WASHPIRG at UW Fall 2021 Newsletter

I wanted to give you a quick update on what WASHPIRG has been working on, and a look ahead and what we’re excited to do in the winter.

Our lead campaign this fall is working to move Beyond Plastics! We’ve already made progress on plastic waste by helping to pass bans on single-use plastic bags and plastic foam. Now we’re working to hold plastic producers responsible for their waste so corporations pay to recycle their plastic products.

This term we cleaned up bags full of plastic trash, collected hundreds of petitions, and met with our legislators. We also fundraised and collected food and clothes for local charities as a part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Check out the coverage in the Daily!

We also partnered with the CELE Center and the ECC to help get the vote out for election day.

In February we’ll host our state lobby day trip to advocate to move Beyond Plastic and keep health care affordable. In April we’ll host Earth Week to advocate for sustainability.

One of my favorite parts of the term was our regional conference! I got to work with student leaders from our chapters across Oregon and Washington to develop our campaign plans, learn leadership skills, and set some goals for the winter.

I’m excited to get to work with you more this year, and thanks for your support!

Best,

Sydney Porter
