Student Leadership

Madison Longbottom //  State Board Chair


Madison Longbottom is a junior Anthropology major and a junior at the University of Washington. She got involved with WashPIRG in 2016 and since then has helped run campaigns to register and turnout young people to vote, promote the transition to 100% clean and renewable energy, and make textbooks more affordable. Most recently Madison led a team to make over 15,000 get out the vote reminder contacts to turn students out to vote in the 2018 Election.

Bethany Shelly //  State Board Vice Chair


Bethany Shelley is a senior studying biology and medicine at the Evergreen State College. With a passion for public health, she first got involved with WashPIRG as a volunteer and then leader on the campaign to stop the routine use of antibiotics on factory farms. In 2017 Bethany managed a team to help in the national effort to convince KFC to commit to only serving chicken raised without the routine use of antibiotics.

Jenn Engstrom //  Organizing Director

Jenn works with WashPIRG chapters on campaign strategy and implementation. Before moving into her current role, Jenn was the Organizing Director for CALPIRG Students where she led a team of organizers to build support for passing Proposition 67 to ban plastic grocery bags in California, save solar energy incentives in the state, and register more than 12,000 students to vote.

Elise Orlick // State Director


Elise drives the strategy development and execution of campaigns and lobbying for WASHPIRG, including recently passing laws that will automatically register eligible Washingtonians to vote and make credit freezes free for everyone in the state. Elise lives in Seattle and enjoys cooking, sewing, cross-country road trips and kayaking in Puget Sound.

Dan Xie  //  Political Director


Dan directs the national political strategy and grant fundraising for the Student PIRGs. Dan has managed successful campaigns from coast to coast to cap global warming pollution, fight the high cost of higher education, and make voting more accessible for students. She has recruited and trained hundreds of students and staff on public interest campaigns and got her start as an intern with CALPIRG Students. Dan lives in St. Petersburg, Fla., where she is an avid cyclist and climber.
